bright black/yellow moth with orange hindwing, on glass

Another Friday evening moth from Jaffrey: Virgin Tiger Moth (Grammia virgo). I've more often found the big tiger moths at the end of their lives when they're in somewhat bad shape. This one flew in actively, fluttered near us for a few minutes (drawn to porch lights), then flew away.

Friday night was too damp for me to put out the UV moth trap, but a check around the outside of Monty's house when I got in found me this Confused Eusarca (Eusarca confusaria).

I had to look through all the Macaria species, and then go back and look again, but I think this is Red-headed Inchworm (Macaria bisignata).

moth on bucket, moth on wall

I still have a backlog of moths to post, but now it's where sorting out the identification is hard. I'm fairly sure these are both Macaria species, and my best guess is Hemlock Angle (Macaria fissinotata) for both of them, despite the somewhat different overall appearance.

This Pale Beauty (Campaea perlata) is from the June 10th weekend - probably two different specimens, since I took one photo late evening, then the other the following evening. They weren't terribly abundant, but I recall seeing these on past years as well.

For today's moth, I'm going all the way back to June 10th for this Pale Metanema (Metanema inatomaria). They're fairly abundant, actually, but I don't think I got a decent picture of one since then.

Northern Pine Sphinx (Lapara bombycoides) - I had more than one of these that night, one on the sheet by the moth trap, and another on the back door. Unremarkable patterning, but impressively large.

This Blinded Sphinx (Paonias excaecata) is a moth I've seen before (including once on a hike before I was specifically making a habit of looking for moths) but they've often been a bit worn looking. This one was fresh and beautiful.

These have been very very common around Jaffrey last two weekends. Apparently genus Symmerista can't be distinguished down to species without dissection, so that's as close as we're getting for now.

Jaffrey NH, 2017/06/24, 2017/06/30 - at least three different specimens.
