"blacklight" bulb in trouble light holder; moth on top, on screen door, grey moth fluttering with wings open showing black hindwings, grey patterned moth

After replacing the fluorescent UV bulb in my collecting kit, I came upon CF blacklight bulbs on Amazon and proceeded to buy one to enhance my moth hunting locations. Last night it was rainy in Jaffrey, and the spot I found where I had both an outlet and shelter was inside the screened porch. The flaw was that the moths would all be flushed by opening the door to go outside, but on my late night visit to the light there was this Catocala andromedae.

Not a new species, but abruptly abundant in Jaffrey: Gray Spruce Looper (Caripeta divisata).

green moth

Not my first of these, but it's always a good night when you see an emerald. Right forewing looked like it was caught behind the hindwing, and it departed when I tried to nudge it free.

Red-fringed Emerald (Nemoria bistriaria)

Large yellow moth on white sheet

I took a rare weekday night out in Jaffrey, since the kids had just gotten back from camp, and I hadn't been along for the pickup. I also got a new blacklight bulb for my moth trap - the old had gotten very dim. It was a good evening for spotting the moths outside, though fairly little was in the bucket when I unpacked it.

This one is Crocus Geometer (Xanthotype Sp.) - there's apparently two species here that can't be distinguished based on external characteristics. I confidently (and incorrectly) identified a similar one two years ago at Pine Haven.

two yellow and black bugs on back of hand, two bugs on goldenrod, showing dorsal view, side view of yellow and black bugs on goldenrod

I would like to get back to the moth habit, but the pickings have been thin - a weekend travelling to visit kids (and rainy nights), a weekend home in Somerville, ordering a replacement blacklight bulb for my moth light. Anyhow, I went out to the Fells yesterday just to walk around and found these. They seem to be Jagged Ambush Bugs (Phymata sp.), but getting the ID closer than genus seems dubious with available materials.

triangular moth on red battery clamp, triangular yellow/black moth on fingertip

It's the lull season for moth hunting in Jaffrey - I think between broods for many things. I put out the light (which isn't working perfectly - I may need a new bulb) and in the morning had caught rather little, but this striking Clymene Moth (Haploa clymene) was sitting on the battery clip.

Large dog lying upsidedown, Large dog curled up on sofa

Having already told facebook, this shouldn't be news to my usual readers, but I wanted to note here that Sherman died on Tuesday (peacefully, at the vet's office) due to his arthritis having progressed to the point where he could not stand. Photos from happier times, earlier this year.

dark moth on paintwork, dark moth on screen

These two photos are of the same specimen - I chased him around trying to get a better picture, and the one with better detail has a lot of glare from the flashlight. I think it's Green Cloverworm (Hypena scabra).

These were one of the moths I found at Pine Haven on Saturday afternoon (both in/on the campground restrooms); I dismissed it as a species I've seen often before, then stumbled a little on the identification. I think it's Horned Spanworm (Nematocampa resistaria).

intricately patterned brown moth on dark wood

I'm slightly unsure of this one, but I think it must be Eoparargyractis plevie. It does not seem to be all that commonly reported. Seen on a porch ceiling while we were visiting the kids at camp (photographic conditions were somewhat awkward, and I have a dozen focus misses).
