red and white quilt of rule 73 cellular automata pattern

This quilt was made between January and May 2015; I'd embargoed the photos pending it making its way to its new home, which it did this month, when I travelled to Toronto (on somewhat short notice).

The pattern is a rule 73 cellular automata. The seed is lightly engineered to get the width/look I wanted - I generated a bunch with random seeds, then picked out sections I liked and shifted them around. Scale is 1" per square, and it's strip pieced in panels, and machine quilted in vertical lines, out of Kona "tomato" and Kona white.

Red-fringed Emerald (Nemoria bistriaria), Red-fringed Emerald (Nemoria bistriaria)

I spotted this moth on the bathroom wall (outside) well out of reach, last time we were at Pine Haven. We then fetched the butterfly net from the car and Monty helped me capture it, to have its photo taken in the morning. It's a Red-fringed Emerald (Nemoria bistriaria). Wentworth NH, 08/07/2015.

Double-banded Grass-veneer

You could convince me that this little guy is any one of the crambus moths, but I think Double-banded Grass-veneer (Crambus agitatellus) is the best fit. Drawn to UV light, Wentworth NH, 8/8/2015.

Virgin Tiger Moth, Virgin Tiger Moth

Monty, George and I are at Pine Haven for a slightly longer weekend than our usual, while we visit Denton at camp tonight and over the weekend. We got in fairly late last night, and ran the moth light, though with a somewhat late start to the light, plus not getting up very early, we didn't have a huge bonanza. We did investigate around the bathrooms, and found a few good ones, including this Virgin Tiger Moth (Grammia virgo).

We actually found two specimens, both on the foundation (below the siding); neither seemed very lively - one fluttered helplessly without taking off, when we picked it up. That did allow us to get a good look at its bright hindwings, however. Virgin Tiger Moth (Grammia virgo), Wentworth NH, 8/6/2015.

Maple Looper (Parallelia bistriaris)

I found this maple looper on the exterior Pine Haven restroom wall Saturday last week when I was up there. It was after dark at that time, but this came put pretty well when lit with my LED headlamp. Superficially similar patterning to the tent caterpillar moths, but plainly not that.
Maple Looper (Parallelia bistriaris), Wentworth, NH, 7/25/2015.

Single-dotted Wave

Here's a moth from the Pine Haven bathrooms last week: Single-dotted Wave (Idaea dimidiata) which is apparently a European native. Wentworth, NH, 7/25/2015.

Horned Spanworm (Nematocampa resistaria)

I found this moth on the restroom door at Pine Haven on Saturday; sadly it was deceased, although still clinging to the wall (until I attempted to capture it). Horned Spanworm (Nematocampa resistaria), Wentworth NH, 7/25/2015.

Longhorned beetle (Parelaphidion aspersum)

I dropped Denton off at camp for three weeks, yesterday. We went up to NH on Saturday, stopped to go blueberry picking, then camped at Pine Haven Saturday night, before dropping off Denton on Sunday afternoon. I had been intending to moth hunt with the light, but had left a crucial part behind, which was disappointing (I have some moths, but not a huge quantity). On the other hand, it rained, so I'm not sure I really wanted to deal with the soggy white sheet, etc.

I spotted this beetle high on the exterior bathroom wall, walking around, and coaxed it onto the top of a stick to get it down, where it seemed comfortable and friendly on my fingers. As I was doing so, another camper walked by, informed me that it's a "stink bug" and upon return from her trip to the restroom explained that they smell bad when you squish them. I said "mm-hmm" and then told her I had no intention of squishing it, and she seemed rather dissatisfied with the encounter. (It's not what I think of as a stink bug, and I have no evidence that it has defensive musk or anything else going on.)

I think it must be Parelaphidion aspersum, though it doesn't seem quite right (I make it at least 25mm, which is bigger than the size given for either species). I see no actual spines to make it Elaphidion mucronatum. Wentworth, NH, 7/26/2015.

Black Witch Moth

I didn't think I'd find any moths to blog while in Hawaii, but today there was this (huge) moth perched on the ceiling of the hotel breezeway. So here's a moth. It's a Black Witch (Ascalapha odorata), Waimea, HI, 07/05/2015. I'd actually spotted one, while hiking in Waipio Valley on Friday, but I never got close enough for a picture (and only distinguished it from a bat on a second pass, using binoculars). We're scheduled to be back by Tuesday morning, so the NH moth blogging will resume then.

Yellow-necked Caterpillar Moth (Datana ministra). I have a sequence of pictures of this one; first the cautious one of it sitting on the sheet next to the light, then folding the sheet to get a better angle, then I get to "I guess he's pretty placid" and poke him until he sits on something other than my finger. Wentworth, NH, 6/14/2015.
