mottled black/white moth on painted siding, mottled black/white moth on painted door, mottled black/white moth with ruler in cm for scale

Last weekend, lots of these moths were out at Monty's porch lights. Quite a variety of patterning. I'm out in Jaffrey again this weekend and may have some moths to find soon - last night was too cold/rainy for them, though.

large brown moth on brown fabric

This large moth, and another like it, came to lights and ended up being accidentally let into Monty's house in Jaffrey. This one is photographed on his tshirt as we scrambled to catch it.

yellow/brown/red moth on plexiglass, ruler for scale showing 21mm wingspan, Ventral view of same moth, showing similar colors, head-on view of moth showing raised abdomen, Moth on leaf, in hand

I set up my UV moth light/bucket with a sheet, next to the little stream that crosses under Monty's driveway in Jaffrey. It was quiet when I went out at midnight, and in the morning the bucket was knocked over. However, this beauty was sitting on one of the plexiglass fins above the bucket.

Greenish/grey mottled moth on dark windowsill, Greenish/grey mottled moth on egg carton

It sounds like other people have been having luck with attracting moths two weeks ago, but tonight was my first night out with lights. I didn't find a cord to hang the sheed up with, but Monty's porch light found me a few moths on one side, and I left the bucket lit on the other side of the house.

These are two separate specimens - one was on the porch, and the other was the sole moth in the bucket when I unpacked it. I think they're both "The Joker" (Feralia jocosa) but I could be convinced otherwise, especially on the first. 4/28, 4/29/2017, Jaffrey NH.

Autumnal Moth (Epirrita autumnata), Autumnal Moth (Epirrita autumnata)

This is a moth I've identified before, but when I went up to Monty's place this weekend there were a full dozen of the (and nothing else) on the walls around his front door.

chunky blue-black beetle on twig, chunky blue-black beetle with hand for scale

I climbed Mt. Monadnock with the kids today. More about that another time, but it was nice and we had a good time. On the way back on Birchtoft trail, I saw this rather imposing beetle wandering slowly along the ground trail-side. Picked it up to get a better look, and noticed it ooze a drop of yellow liquid out a leg joint (shown in the second picture), which I had the good sense not to touch (it apparently contains a blistering agent). It's an oil beetle, but it's not quite clear to me which species - maybe (Meloe impressus)? Jaffrey NH, 09/17/2016.

Brownish frog on window pane, lit by flashlight

I think this would be the first wild tree frog I've seen North of Florida. I think it must be a gray tree frog (Hyla versicolor). On Monty's kitchen window, in Jaffrey, NH, 2016/09/10.

beetle, half-hidden under dead deer mouse, partly covered wtih debris, beetle, alone on sandy ground

Out hiking in Carey park in Jaffrey, I came upon several of these brightly colored beetles at a mouse carcass. They were quite busy, often running out from under the mouse and taking little loops around and back to it - the carcass moved quite a lot when they went under, and I think the twigs on top had been recently placed there by the beetles.

I think they are Tomentose Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus tomentosus). Jaffrey, NH, 2016/08/28.

White spider on white aster flowers, black background

I bought a UV flashlight with the hope of using it to find caterpillars. It's roughly 395nm, and makes it really easy to find bird poop and tennis balls. Found a few caterpillars too, as well as a number of spiders, including this one. She's nicely camouflashed on the aster in visible light, but stands out sharply in UV.

I think it's a female goldenrod crab spider (Misumena vatia) but not sure I have a good enough view to be completely sure. Jaffrey, NH, 2016/08/27.
